Action research on the culturally resilient reactivation of the Beatrix Theatre in Moengo

Action research on the culturally resilient reactivation of the Beatrix Theatre in Moengo

↓ Projectinfo

Moengo, a former company town of a bauxite company that closed in 2015, is located two hours from Paramaribo. It could be revived as an urban employment and amenity centre for surrounding villages. After the Surinamese internal war, the population changed, and many houses are now inhabited by Maroons. With the departure of the bauxite company, control over the houses and their maintenance disappeared. Unemployment is high, and the town suffers from systematic neglect of public infrastructure, making the residential areas highly vulnerable to flooding.

The focus of this master's thesis research will be on the Beatrix Theatre in Moengo, specifically on architectural research and cultural brokerage. The building was recently acquired by a local foundation called ‘Kracht Voor De Toekomst’ but is currently in poor condition. The research aims to design a phased renovation plan for the building that allows meaningful use by the communities in Moengo at each stage. The goal is to implement a small-scale tactical intervention, improvement, or test during the students' fieldwork period.
