A guided tour in and around Mariënburg

This guide tells the story of Mariënburg. Walking through the factory grounds you will learn all about the glory years of the sugar factory, the process of turning sugar cane into sugar, but also about the workers who were employed here.

This tourist walk, however, goes far beyond the factory grounds. The Mariënburg sugar factory is now closed, but the working-class neighborhood is livelier than ever. As soon as you leave the factory grounds, you are immersed in the world of the old workers and their descendants. They developed the working-class neighborhood according to their own culture after the closure. The diversity of cultures is therefore immediately noticeable in the streetscape of Mariënburg.

In the neighborhood you will walk along different projects: remnants of the plantation era, but also projects that were set up afterwards by the residents themselves. At the end of this guide you will find a map of Mariënburg with an indication of the different projects about which information is given. The numbers correspond to the numbering of the information in the brochure. You can follow the numbers during the walking tour, but this is not necessary. In the information provided in the guide, some terms and phrases are printed in bold. These terms correspond to pictures which you will find at the end of the guide in the same order. We wish you a pleasant experience of culture and nature on this surprising tour!
