A design exploration for the Coronie case study.

This master’s thesis is the result of interdisciplinary research into the redevelopment of the East-West Connection in the Coronie district of Suriname. Together with a student from the Master’s program in Urban Planning and Spatial Planning and two students from the Master’s program in Architecture, we conducted a study in Coronie as part of the International Studies for Territories in Transition (ISTT) studio. Through the collaboration of students from different disciplines, this research has gained versatility and an interdisciplinary character.

This research builds upon a previous study by M. Baeyens, L. Leys, and R. Moftah (2022) on the development of Coronie, with special attention given to the Roman Catholic ensemble.

The thesis consists of four separate books, each with its own theme. This book focuses on an investigation into traffic safety in Coronie. First, the theoretical framework is outlined, followed by a problem statement and research question. Subsequently, the methodology is described, including the applied on-site approach. After a brief discussion of the historical context, the results of the analysis are addressed. Finally, some design solutions are presented, along with recommendations that could potentially contribute to future research next year.
